PowerPoint add-ins

One install per machine puts the full set of RoomSum slide add-ins into PowerPoint: RS Start (sign in, open the session, and show the join QR during the slideshow), RS Question (set any question number per slide) that drives participant phones or shows a question’s results without moving them, RS Extra (each slide shows either the QR and link for the class’s action plan, with a live count of plans submitted, or the course evaluation, opened on every phone while it is on screen, with a live count of responses), DS Check (runs one Checkpoint round from a slide, for organizations that connect DriveState), and DS Room (the DriveState Room View on the slide, for the debrief). Re-run the installer any time to update. On Windows it also removes RS Results, RS Action and RS Eval, which RS Question and RS Extra replace; on a Mac, delete their files (roomsum-manifest.xml, roomsum-manifest-action.xml and roomsum-manifest-eval.xml) from the wef folder the installer opens.

Signed & notarized by Apple, for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later). Open the download, open Install RoomSum Add-ins, and drag the tile it shows into the PowerPoint folder it opens. That one drag is macOS’s rule: only you may put files in PowerPoint’s folder. No administrator password.

Using Chrome? It may block a new installer as a suspicious file. Open Chrome’s downloads list and choose to keep it.

Download the script and double-click it (Windows 10 or later). It fetches the add-ins from roomsum.com, so nothing else is needed. If Windows says “Windows protected your PC”, choose More info, then Run anyway; no administrator rights are involved.

  1. 1. Run the installer (on a Mac, drag its tile into the PowerPoint folder it opens), then quit PowerPoint completely and reopen it.
  2. 2. In PowerPoint: Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins, and you’ll see the RoomSum slides. If the list is ever slow to open, save your deck and restart PowerPoint. Insert each add-in once; after that, duplicate the slide.
  3. 3. Drag the add-in to fill the slide. An inserted add-in can land smaller than the slide. Grab its corner handles and stretch it to the edges, or the room sees a small panel floating on a large slide.
  4. 4. Put RS Start on your first slide, sign in once on that machine, and open the session there. In the slideshow that slide becomes the join screen, QR code and all. Every RS Question slide after it attaches to whatever session is live for the class. Prefer to keep the sign-in slide hidden? Add a second RS Start where the join screen belongs and press “Use this deck’s class for this slide” on it.
  5. 5. Building your own deck? Each slide asks for your organization, class code, and the class key from your admin page, once per deck.

The five minute deck

Starter kit

A twelve-slide deck you run by yourself in about five minutes: sign in from the deck, open a session, vote, watch two answers merge into one, moderate a question, and publish. You insert the add-ins as you go, which is the only skill the product asks of you; the Add-ins list is slow to open now and then, and a restart fixes it. Speaker notes carry the whole script.

Updated October 8, 2026. The date is on the deck’s first slide too, so you can tell an old copy from a current one.

Pro tip

Set each add-in slide’s background to match the background image you use in RoomSum. The add-in fills the slide with your RoomSum look, so a matching slide background makes the seam invisible while it loads and on any edge that does not line up exactly. Class branding lives under Organization → Branding.

Need help?

  • Slides show an empty frame: the add-ins aren’t installed on that machine. Run the installer above and reopen the deck.
  • A slide says the key doesn’t match: copy the class key again from your admin page; it changes if the class is duplicated.
  • A slide shows its picture, not the live view (Windows): the deck is in Review mode. Open any RoomSum slide’s settings and click Live view.
  • Slides print blank: open any RoomSum slide’s settings and use Show print images under Whole deck, then print or export. Restore the live view before presenting.
  • Using PowerPoint for the web: the installers above are for PowerPoint on a Mac or a Windows PC. In the browser, add RS Start, RS Question and RS Extra one at a time with Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins → Upload My Add-in, using each add-in’s manifest file from https://roomsum.com/ppt/manifest-start.xml for RS Start, https://roomsum.com/ppt/manifest-question.xml for RS Question and https://roomsum.com/ppt/manifest-extra.xml for RS Extra. DS Check and DS Room do not run on the web yet; there they show a notice that says so.
  • The slideshow moves ahead by itself (PowerPoint for the web): after your last edit, start the slideshow from the last slide and press Esc. Then present. If the show still moves ahead on its own, press the left arrow. If a slide says it could not load the add-in, press Retry.

Note: opening a configured deck on a machine without the add-ins shows ADD-IN ERROR on its RoomSum slides. Nothing is wrong with the deck: run the installer, quit PowerPoint and reopen it. Don’t delete the slides. The exception is a slide built with RS Results, RS Action or RS Eval: those add-ins are retired, so rebuild it with RS Question (Show results only ticked) or RS Extra.
